The other day at the lunch table, my colleague jokingly asked: "Arun, being a Malayalee, have you started buying Gold for your daughter's wedding?" For those of you who don't know the relationship between Gold and Malayalees, here it is: Malayalees love gold. Especially when it comes to their daughters' wedding. I guess it originated… Continue reading Buying Gold for my daughter

3 months without a smartphone
Today I complete 3 months of NOT using my BlackBerry. Here is my story. I have been a BlackBerry addict. The first thing I do in the morning is to half open an eyelid and skim through my BlackBerry emails. The last thing I do at night is to watch for red light blinking and… Continue reading 3 months without a smartphone
DNS Reservation error: The Unique Identifier you have entered may not be correct. Do you want to use this Identifier anyway?
This is more of an annoyance than an actual issue. At the time of DNS reservation, I found this error when I am providing perfectly valid MAC address and IP address. It turns out this is nothing but Windows telling you that it doesn't like the colon (:) in the MAC address. Removing colons like… Continue reading DNS Reservation error: The Unique Identifier you have entered may not be correct. Do you want to use this Identifier anyway?
Finding and deleting zero KB files from the current directory in Solaris
Unlike Linux which has lots of GNU utilities like 'maxdepth', 'depth' etc... Solaris(and perhaps other flavors of Unix) doesnt have a similar utility to specify the depth of the 'find' command. After some Googling I found a way to do this on Solaris. Find below - To find all in a directory(to just list you can… Continue reading Finding and deleting zero KB files from the current directory in Solaris
Giving up
I am sad today when I realize how many things I have given up in my life. I am not talking about the great opportunities or the big lotteries that were to be won. I am talking about those brief moments in which I gave up those seemingly small things in a seemingly reasonable way.… Continue reading Giving up
XenServer VM fails to start with the error – “This operation cannot be performed because the specified VDI could not be found on the storage substrate”
I powered On my XenServer VM and was shocked to find that the VMs couldn't be powered On. This was the error message that I received. This could be because of numerous reasons but in my case it was because an ISO file was attached to the VM. Removing it had my XenServer VM powered… Continue reading XenServer VM fails to start with the error – “This operation cannot be performed because the specified VDI could not be found on the storage substrate”

Why should you join a startup?
One of my best friends who work for IBM Rational wanted to ‘try’ a start-up. After months of study and seeking different opinions he had his ideas which he shared with me. I realized that despite all the time and effort he spent, he had no clue about how it is to work for a… Continue reading Why should you join a startup?
Outlook 2007 – emails not deleted, only striked off
I wasted about half an hour trying to figure out an annoying feature of Outlook 2007 which prevents emails getting cleared from Inbox. So, when I delete emails from Inbox, it gets striked off(marked for deletion) but just sits there. But If you think that you don’t need to delete the emails from the Exchange Server… Continue reading Outlook 2007 – emails not deleted, only striked off
Exception: 1219 WNetAddConnection2 Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.
This could happen when you use VMware Server with SMB storage or otherwise. The error message is pretty self explanatory but here is how it can happen with VMware Server. Consider that VMware Server is installed on a machine which mounts SMB storage location with an administrator account. Windows doesnt allow two sessions access the… Continue reading Exception: 1219 WNetAddConnection2 Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed.
