Book Review: And Then There Were None

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Leaves you hanging in suspense.

This is my first Agatha Christie novel. I have heard great things about her work, but I have always thought it was dated and hard for me to relate to. Ohh boy… I couldn’t be more wrong about this one.

The storytelling is smooth as silk, and the characters are carefully crafted. Everyone has a peculiar style, interesting backgrounds, and unique motives for their murders. The place “Soldier Island” is so apt for this story with its lifeless soul and little to no empathy towards its inhabitants. I loved the good old English story-telling with lots of emphasis on people’s personalities and their prejudices.

The story begins slowly but gains speed steadily. Each murder serves as a milestone to increase the level of suspense for the readers. The novel leaves you with no doubts about why Agatha Christie is so highly regarded, even after half a century. At the end of the tenth murder, you may imagine a list of possibilities for the killer and his or her motives. The suspense is beautifully constructed, leaving the readers satisfied with having spent time well spent on an entertaining crime thriller.
